Xiaomi to Introduce EREVs for the First Time in 2026 as EV Strategy Evolves
After the strong market response to its first electric sedan and SUV, Xiaomi is preparing a major expansion of its automotive lineup in 2026. According to reports from China, the company plans to launch four new models, and for the first time, Xiaomi will add Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs) to its portfolio.
The move directly targets one of the biggest concerns among EV buyers: long-distance range anxiety.
Why Xiaomi Is Betting on EREVs
Extended Range Electric Vehicles remain fully electric at the wheels, but include a small gasoline engine that acts solely as a generator to recharge the battery while driving. The engine never powers the wheels directly, preserving the electric driving experience while adding long-distance flexibility.
Xiaomi has been preparing for this shift for years. Since 2023, the company has been actively recruiting specialists in range-extender and large-battery hybrid systems, signaling a long-term commitment rather than a short-term experiment.

Kunlun: Xiaomi’s First Large 7-Seat EREV SUV
The flagship of Xiaomi’s 2026 rollout will be a large seven-seat EREV SUV, currently known by the internal codename Kunlun.
Key highlights reported so far:
-
Launch expected in the first half of 2026
-
Designed for large families and long-distance travel
-
Battery capacity exceeding 70 kWh
-
Electric-only range: approx. 400–500 km
-
Significantly longer total range when the range extender is active
Recent high-temperature testing in Xinjiang, personally attended by Lei Jun, revealed camouflaged prototypes equipped with exhaust pipes, confirming the use of gasoline-powered generators.
The Kunlun SUV is expected to compete directly with models such as the Li Auto L9, one of China’s most popular premium family EREVs.
Smaller 5-Seat EREV SUV Coming Later in 2026
Xiaomi isn’t limiting EREV technology to large vehicles. In the second half of 2026, the company plans to introduce a five-seat EREV SUV, aimed at:
-
Younger buyers
-
Smaller families
-
Urban drivers seeking stress-free long-distance capability
Together with the existing Xiaomi YU7, this will give Xiaomi three SUV sizes, covering a broad range of customer needs.

SU7 Sedan Updates: Refresh and Executive Version
The Xiaomi SU7 will also receive important updates in 2026:
-
Early 2026: refreshed standard SU7
-
Second half of 2026: launch of a luxury SU7 Executive variant
The Executive version targets chauffeur-driven buyers, featuring:
-
Extended wheelbase
-
Increased rear legroom
-
Rear-cabin comfort upgrades focused on premium passengers
Strategic Shift Beyond Pure EVs
Industry analysts expect 2025 to be a breakout year for large-battery hybrids and EREVs, with brands such as XPeng also preparing similar launches. Xiaomi appears determined not to fall behind.
Currently, Xiaomi lists more than 20 open positions dedicated specifically to hybrid and range-extender technology — a clear sign that the company’s EV strategy is evolving beyond pure battery-electric vehicles.
Big Picture
Xiaomi’s move into EREVs represents a calculated expansion rather than a retreat from electrification. By combining:
-
Long electric-only range
-
Gas-powered backup for remote travel
-
Competitive pricing and strong brand appeal
Xiaomi is positioning itself to challenge established Chinese automakers on multiple fronts. Having already proven it can successfully transition from smartphones to cars, the company now aims to make range anxiety a non-issue — and make life harder for its competitors in the process.
