XPeng X9 PowerX review

XPeng Launches Its First Extended-Range MPV With Luxury Interior and 1,602 km CLTC Range

XPeng has officially introduced the 2026 XPeng X9 PowerX, the extended-range version of its futuristic electric MPV. We visited Guangzhou for a full walk-around and test ride of this new model — and while the PowerX is visually almost identical to the pure-electric X9, it hides a completely new powertrain under its sleek exterior.

With a spacious three-row interior, 800V architecture, and an ultra-long driving range thanks to its new EREV (range-extended EV) system, the X9 PowerX aims to become one of the strongest premium MPV competitors in China and upcoming European markets.

🎨 Exterior Design: Futuristic, Sleek, Surprisingly Elegant

The Chinese MPV segment is extremely competitive, but the X9 has stood out since launch with its:

  • Low, aerodynamic front end

  • Sharp LED lighting signature

  • Distinctive cab-forward silhouette

  • Sloping rear roofline

  • Clean, minimalistic panels

In photos, the X9 can look almost controversial — but in real life, its proportions are cleverly disguised. Despite its massive footprint, the X9 looks smaller and sportier than almost any MPV on the market.

The PowerX version is just 20 mm longer than the BEV, an almost invisible difference.

🔋 Powertrain: New Kunpeng Super Range Extension System

XPeng developed an entirely new EREV powertrain called the Kunpeng Super Range Extension System, consisting of:

1. 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline generator

Placed in the front, it never drives the wheels directly — it only generates electricity.

2. 63.3 kWh battery pack

Large enough for a standalone EV-only range of 452 km under CLTC.

3. 281 hp rear electric motor

Smooth, quiet, and tuned for comfort rather than aggressive acceleration.

Real-world range expectations

The 1,602 km claim is CLTC-based, but even 70% real-world efficiency puts it at ~1,120 km, far above rival MPVs.

Fast-charging performance

Thanks to 800V architecture:

  • +300 km in 10 minutes

  • Among the fastest recharging speeds in the MPV segment

Since the battery is relatively large, XPeng expects most daily driving to be electric-only.
