MG Begins Deliveries of MG4 With Semi-Solid-State Battery, Marking a First for Affordable EVs

Chinese automotive giant SAIC Motor has officially started customer deliveries of the MG4 Anxin Edition, a special version of the new-generation MG4 EV that becomes the world’s first affordable electric car equipped with a semi-solid-state battery.

The launch represents a major milestone in battery technology, bringing a solution previously reserved for premium EVs into the mass-market compact segment.

A New Generation MG4 With a Global Mission

Although the original MG4 Electric has only been on sale in Europe since 2022, SAIC unveiled a completely new generation as early as March 2025. The accelerated update was driven in part by the model’s limited success in China, despite strong European sales.

With the new MG4, SAIC aims to create its first truly global MG model, targeting:

  • China

  • Other Asian markets

  • Europe (launch planned for 2026)

Surprise Fifth Variant: The Anxin Edition

When Chinese sales began in late summer, MG surprised the market by offering five variants instead of the four initially announced.

The standout addition is the MG4 Anxin Edition, which features a semi-solid-state battery supplied by QingTao Energy, a company SAIC invested in several years ago.

Semi-solid-state batteries are considered a transitional technology between conventional lithium-ion cells and full solid-state batteries. They reduce the amount of liquid electrolyte, improving:

  • Safety

  • Thermal stability

  • Energy density

  • Charging performance

Bringing Advanced Battery Tech to the Mass Market

Until now, only NIO has mass-produced semi-solid-state batteries, supplied by WeLion — and only in significantly more expensive premium EVs.

This makes the MG4 Anxin Edition:

  • The first compact EV for the mass market

  • The first affordable MG model to use semi-solid-state battery technology

Pricing: Shockingly Low in China

MG has now begun delivering the Anxin Edition to Chinese customers.

  • MG4 Anxin Edition (semi-solid-state): ~100,000 yuan (≈ €12,000)

  • MG4 with conventional lithium-ion battery: from ~70,000 yuan (≈ €8,500)

Whether the Anxin Edition will be offered in Europe remains unconfirmed. Prices in Europe are expected to be significantly higher due to logistics and import duties. For reference, the current “old” MG4 Electric starts at €34,990 in Germany.

Technical Specifications: MG4 Anxin Edition

  • Battery type: Manganese-based semi-solid-state

  • Liquid electrolyte reduction: ~5% vs conventional Li-ion

  • Battery capacity: 53.95 kWh

  • Motor: Permanent magnet synchronous motor

  • Maximum output: 120 kW

  • Range (CLTC): 530 km

  • Energy consumption: 11.9 kWh / 100 km

  • Fast charging:

    • 30–80% in 21 minutes (2C charging)

  • Top speed: 160 km/h

Larger Than Before

The new MG4 generation has grown in size compared to its predecessor:

  • Length: 4.40 m

  • Width: 1.84 m

  • Height: 1.55 m

  • Wheelbase: 2.75 m

This places it closer to the C-segment in footprint, improving interior space and road presence.

Why This Matters

By introducing semi-solid-state batteries at budget-EV pricing, SAIC and MG are accelerating the real-world adoption of next-generation battery technology. If this technology reaches Europe, it could significantly reshape expectations for range, safety, and charging performance in affordable electric cars.

For now, the MG4 Anxin Edition stands as a clear signal: advanced battery tech is no longer limited to premium EVs.
