Geely EX2

Geely EX2 Confirmed for Australia: Sub-$30K Electric Hatchback Arriving in 2026

Another affordable electric vehicle is heading to Australia. Geely has confirmed the EX2 electric hatchback will launch locally in the second half of 2026, targeting the budget end of the EV market with pricing expected to fall below $30,000 AUD.

The compact EX2 will become Geely’s most affordable EV in Australia, serving as an entry point to the brand’s growing local lineup and taking direct aim at rivals such as the MG4 and BYD Atto 1, currently Australia’s cheapest electric car.

Affordable EVs Gaining Momentum in Australia

While mid-size electric SUVs continue to dominate overall EV sales, it is lower-priced electric hatchbacks that are increasingly putting pressure on petrol-powered alternatives. Models like the Geely EX2 could play a key role in accelerating Australia’s transition to electric mobility.

The EX2 marks Geely’s first entry into the compact city-car EV segment in Australia — a space that is becoming increasingly competitive.

A Proven Bestseller in China

Known as the Geely Xingyuan (Star Wish) in its home market, the EX2 arrives with strong credentials.

In 2025, the model has:

  • Regularly ranked as China’s best-selling vehicle

  • It is on track to exceed 400,000 units sold for the year

That level of success suggests Geely has found a winning formula in terms of price, technology, and usability.

Platform, Layout, and Driving Dynamics

The Geely EX2 is built on the brand’s Global Intelligent Electric Architecture (GEEA) — the same platform used by the larger Geely EX5.

However, unlike the front-wheel-drive EX5, the EX2 features:

  • Rear-mounted electric motor

  • Rear-wheel drive layout

This configuration is expected to improve balance, handling, and driving engagement, while also enabling a front trunk (frunk) for additional storage — a rarity in the budget EV segment.

Size and Market Positioning

Dimensionally, the EX2 sits firmly in the compact electric hatchback category:

  • Length: just over 4.0 metres

  • Width: approximately 1.8 metres

This places it squarely against:

  • MG4

  • BYD Atto 1

It may also attract buyers stepping up from traditional petrol hatchbacks such as the Toyota Yaris and Mazda2, which have become significantly more expensive in recent years.

Battery Options and Performance

In overseas markets, the Geely EX2 is offered with two LFP battery options:

  • 30.12 kWh battery

    • Motor output: 58 kW / 130 Nm

  • 40.16 kWh battery

    • Motor output: 85 kW / 150 Nm

Both batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, known for durability, lower cost, and improved thermal stability.

Geely has not yet confirmed which battery versions will be offered in Australia. Final specifications will be announced closer to launch.

Driving Range Expectations

In China, the EX2 is rated for:

  • 310–410 km (CLTC cycle)

However, under Australia’s more realistic WLTP testing, expected range figures are likely to be:

  • Approximately 260–330 km, depending on battery size

This positions the EX2 competitively within the affordable EV segment.

Pricing Strategy: Value Over Price Wars

While Geely has not confirmed official pricing, expectations are that the EX2 will be priced under $30,000 AUD, comfortably below the larger Geely EX5, which starts at $40,990 before on-road costs.

When asked whether the EX2 would undercut the BYD Atto 1 ($23,990 + on-roads), Geely Australia executives indicated that being the absolute cheapest EV is not the primary goal.

Instead, the EX2 is expected to focus on value, technology, and driving experience, rather than headline price alone.

A Key Model for Mass EV Adoption

With strong sales performance in China, modern technology, rear-wheel drive dynamics, and budget-friendly pricing, the Geely EX2 could become one of the most important affordable EV launches in Australia when it arrives in 2026.
