Peugeot Revives the Iconic 103 as an Electric Moped for the Modern City

Peugeot has officially brought back one of its most iconic two-wheelers — the Peugeot 103 — reimagined for the electric age. The legendary French moped that once defined affordable urban mobility has now said “au revoir” to petrol and “bonjour” to battery power, while retaining much of the charm that made it famous.

Originally launched in the 1970s, the Peugeot 103 became a cultural symbol across Europe thanks to its simplicity, light weight, and license-free accessibility. Now, Peugeot is betting that the same formula — updated with modern electric technology — can work again for a new generation of city riders.

Two Battery Options for Urban Riding

The electric Peugeot 103 is offered with two removable battery options, allowing buyers to choose between range and performance depending on their needs.

  • 1.6 kWh battery

    • Estimated range: ~30 miles (48 km)

    • Equivalent to a traditional 50cc moped

    • Top speed: ~30 mph (48 km/h)

  • 2.2 kWh battery

    • Estimated range: ~40 miles (64 km)

    • Positioned as a 125cc-equivalent

    • Top speed: ~45 mph (72 km/h)

Both versions are clearly aimed at urban commuting, short trips, and local deliveries rather than long-distance riding.

Swappable Battery for Easy Home Charging

One of the Peugeot 103 EV’s most practical features is its removable battery system. Riders can simply lift the battery out and charge it indoors, making the moped ideal for apartment dwellers or users without access to outdoor charging.

This design removes one of the biggest barriers to electric two-wheel ownership in cities: charging convenience.

Lightweight Modern Engineering

Beneath its retro styling, the new Peugeot 103 uses thoroughly modern engineering.

  • Frame: Aluminium monocoque chassis

  • Drive system: Central electric motor with Kevlar belt drive

  • Kerb weight: Approximately 227 lb (103 kg)

The belt drive system is virtually maintenance-free, quieter than a chain, and more durable — ideal for daily city use.

Smooth Electric Performance

While Peugeot hasn’t released acceleration figures, electric torque delivery ensures smooth and responsive acceleration, particularly useful in stop-and-go traffic.

The riding experience is designed to be:

  • Quiet

  • Vibration-free

  • Easy for new riders

In short, it stays true to the original 103’s role as a stress-free urban mobility solution.

Optional Packs: Protection or Comfort

Peugeot offers two optional accessory packs to tailor the moped to different lifestyles:

Protect Pack

  • Windscreen

  • Leg shields

  • Side panels

  • Designed for year-round riding and weather protection

Comfort Pack

  • Semi-rigid Givi top case

  • Quad Lock smartphone mount

  • Premium comfort seat with cover

The Comfort Pack, in particular, reinforces the 103’s role as a practical daily companion — perfect for commuting, shopping, or café runs.

Pricing and Availability

  • Expected price: around €3,200–€3,500 (≈ $3,500)

  • Launch markets: Europe only (initially)

  • U.S. availability: No plans confirmed

Despite strong demand for compact electric two-wheelers in the U.S., Peugeot has not announced any intention to bring the electric 103 to North America.

A Missed Opportunity for the U.S. Market?

With electric mopeds like the Vespa Elettrica and NIU NQi already gaining traction in American cities, the Peugeot 103 EV would seem like a natural fit. Its heritage, removable battery, and competitive pricing could make it a strong entry-level option for urban riders.

For now, however, the electric Peugeot 103 remains a Europe-focused revival, leaving international fans hoping Peugeot reconsiders its global strategy.

A Classic Reborn — Electrified and Relevant

The return of the Peugeot 103 as an electric moped shows that small, affordable EVs still matter. By blending nostalgic design with practical modern technology, Peugeot has created a compelling city vehicle that honours its past while embracing the future.
